Three low-mass companions around aged stars discovered by TESS

Abstract

Three low-mass celestial companions to older stars have been identified using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). These include a brown dwarf (TOI-2336b) and two objects near the hydrogen burning mass limit (TOI-1608b and TOI-2521b). All of them appear to be inflated in size. There's a positive correlation between the flux and the radius for brown dwarfs and low-mass stars, although this is weaker than what's seen for giant planets. Two of these objects, TOI-1608 and TOI-2521, are believed to be in spin-orbit synchronization, causing their primary stars to rotate unusually quickly for their age. These systems offer insights into the evolution of stellar systems affected by tidal effects, especially those with brown dwarf and low-mass stellar companions.
