Dr. Van Kley earned a B.S. in biology, biochemistry and pedagogy from Bashkir State University in Ufa, Russia. She then earned a Ph.D. in plant physiology from the Belarussian Academy of Science in Minsk, Belarus. Her research focuses primarily on the detection and characterization of bacterial and fungal communities.
