Dr. Herbert Midgley serves as a faculty member at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he completed five degrees: a Bachelor's and Master's in Music Theory and Composition, a Master of Education in Secondary Education, a Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking and Cinematography, and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership. His musical education included studying under notable composers Delbert Bump and Dr. Mac Cooks from California and SFA faculty members Dr. Dan Beaty, Dr. Richard Coolidge, and Darrell Holt. For his film studies, he trained with Professor William Arscott.

With over two decades of experience in composition, Midgley's musical portfolio spans diverse genres and forms. His works include a symphony, twelve original band compositions, large-form pieces, electronic music for both tape and live performance, and avant-garde compositions. He has also written extensively for chamber ensembles, creating quartets and quintets for wind and string instruments and solo pieces for piano and various other instruments.

His career in education began as a pioneer, serving as the first music teacher in Zavalla, Texas, where he taught music across all grade levels in the public school system. During his tenure, he enriched the elementary school programs by composing and performing original music. He later joined the SFA School of Music faculty.

In the realm of music technology, Midgley is an acknowledged expert in Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) and music software applications. He specializes in teaching music notation, sequencing, and computer-assisted instruction (CAI) software. He regularly shares his expertise at major Texas conferences, including the Texas Musical Educators Association and Technology in Music Education events. Additionally, in the past, he served the SFA Music Preparatory Division as both a music technology coordinator and private guitar instructor.

Midgley's creative output extends significantly into filmmaking, with over 7,000 YouTube videos spanning various genres, including educational content, music theory, composition tutorials, guitar instruction, music videos, and sci-fi short films. He is versatile in the film industry, working as a director, screenwriter, editor, composer, and actor in short and independent films. His combined expertise in music and film makes him particularly valuable as a film composer.

His professional memberships include the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honorary Society, Kappa Delta Pi International Education Honor Society, and the Education Law Association (ELA).
